Your kid is "too active", "too distracted", or "can not focus"
If you ever heard this from an educator, read this NYT article. Plus class size law, NAEP, and too much staff and not enough students in DC
Paul Tough has an essential article on NYT about the latest research on ADHD diagnosis and treatments. If you have a kid who has been described as “too active” or “too distracted”, I highly recommend that you read “Have We Been Thinking About A.D.H.D. All Wrong?”
“Last year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that 11.4 percent of American children had been diagnosed with A.D.H.D., a record high. That figure includes 15.5 percent of American adolescents, 21 percent of 14-year-old boys and 23 percent of 17-year-old boys. Seven million American children have received an A.D.H.D. diagnosis, up from six million in 2016 and two million in the mid-1990s.”
I read Paul Tough book “Whatever it Takes” right after grad school and it had a huge impact on me - it helped me decide to focus my career on education and supporting charter schools. His other books “How children succeed” and “Helping children succeed” were also very interesting and informative.
