It’s been a long time since I last wrote here because life sometimes takes over… I spent a lot of time going on long walks with my kids this summer, and I am now convinced that the best way to parent a teenager is to go on long walks. Everybody is calmer after some exercise, and it’s the best way to have a conversation - like the best way to talk to a little kid is when putting them to sleep. If you have any advice on raising teenage boys, send it my way!
Last week the Treasury Department released the regulations for the Federal Scholarship Tax Credit, and there is great news for parents. I wrote about it at City Journal:
It’s the unions and the lack of school accountability!
Nicole Hannah-Jones’ essay about her experience sending her daughter to a low-performing school in NYC has generated more than 80 responses. I wrote on City Journal Substack that the lack of accountability and the absurd regulations created by union contracts drive much of the dysfunction her daughter experienced.
What I am reading
I finished another Russian book my husband recommended: “To be preserved forever” by Lev Kopelev. The author was a major in the Soviet Army during WW2 and became one of the victims of Stalin’s purge. Kopelev fights the unfair accusations until the end while still believing in the Communist Party. Unfortunately the book is out of print but you can find used copies on Amazon.
