Governors saying NO to low-income students
Only politics stands between the governor and millions in federal scholarship dollars for low-income New Yorkers
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act has many problems but it might also bring school choice to low-income students in states like NY. The bill offers a $1,700 dollar-for-dollar reduction of their federal tax bill that can be donated to “scholarship granting organizations” (SGOs).
It is a no-brainer for states: you get these funds that come from the federal government and organizations in your state can offer scholarships to the neediest students. Unfortunately some states like Oregon and New Mexico have already said no.
I wrote at City Journal how Governor Hochul should opt in: NY is one of the states the pay the highest share of federal taxes, there is no reason (besides teachers’ union influence) to deny this opportunity to NY low-income families.
